Greek Dipping OIl

We all know just how much Greeks love their psomaki (bread)! Bread has a very special place on the Greek table, whether it’s served for lunch or dinner.  We agree that dipping your bread in all the wonderful juices of a Horiatiki Salad or sopping up all the delicious tomato sauce goodness in Fasolakia is absolutely heavenly!  Even though we do watch our consumption of bread,(moderation is the key) we occasionally like to splurge and make this super easy Greek Dipping Oil. It’s an effortless appetizer or accompaniment to any meal!  We can almost guarantee that the list of ingredients for this easy herbed dipping sauce can be found in your pantry.  The key to this tasty recipe is using a quality extra virgin olive oil, as it makes a huge difference in the taste.

Choosing A Quality Olive Oil

There’s no doubt that choosing a quality olive oil makes a difference in the taste of a dish; not all olive oils are created equal. When a bottle is labeled extra virgin olive oil, it means that no chemicals or heat have been added in the process. Extra-virgin is a term used to mean the oil was cold pressed from the first pressing of the olives, which results in the purest, least acidic and–we think–the best tasting olive oil. Here are a few tips for choosing your olive oil:

  1. Only buy oil labeled extra-virgin
  2. Avoid any oil in a clear bottle, as light will alter the flavor and aroma.
  3. Fresher is better, as older olive oil loses flavor.
  4. Check the label, if you see more that one country or region listed its best to avoid that brand.
Rich Extra Virgin Olive Oil

If you are undecided on the brand of olive oil to use, buy several small tins or bottles to experiment with until you find the one you like best.  Isn’t that a tasty, fun way to experiment?! We’d love to hear the kind of olive oil you love using, just comment below.
