Healthy apple crisp with a dollop of greek yogurt

This recipe for Healthy Apple Crisp is refined sugar-free, grain-free, dairy-free and gluten-free! And believe us when we say that this recipe does not skimp on the flavor! The apples themselves caramelize in the oven creating a delicious naturally sweet, soft texture. Eat the apple crisp on its own or topped with Greek yogurt flavored with maple syrup and cinnamon (or non-dairy yogurt), banana “nice” cream or if you’re feeling indulgent regular ice cream! Now let’s talk about how to make this scrumptious dish.

Preparing the Apples

The most important part of preparing your apples is removing the skin. Don’t skip this step of the apples won’t caramelize properly when baking! Once the skin is removed core and then slice the apples into ¼” thick slices.  Add the apple slices to a bowl and top with cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Stir until the apples are coated with the spices.

Putting it all together

Add the apples to the bottom of a 9×13” baking dish. Then pour the crisp topping mixture over the apples and spread it out evenly using a spatula. You can then top with additional cinnamon is you’d like. Now it’s ready to bake! Place in a preheated 350-degree oven. The apple crisp will take 30-40 minutes to cook depending on your oven. You’ll want to check it often to make sure that the topping does not burn. If you find it cooking more in certain areas you can just move the topping around with a spatula. Once the apples are bubbling and soft and the topping is golden brown it’s done!

What type of apples can you use?

We used granny smith apples, we love using this type when baking. But really, you can use any type of apples and you will still get a fabulous crisp!

Ingredients

  • 6 apples peeled and sliced
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

Topping

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • ¾ cup pecans chopped
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Add the peeled and sliced apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup and vanilla extract to a large bowl. Stir to combine and spread the mixture evenly into a baking dish.
  • In another bowl combine the dry topping ingredients, then stir in the coconut oil. Spread the topping over the apple mixture and sprinkle the top with additional cinnamon (optional).
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
  • Optional: mix Greek yogurt, cinnamon and maple syrup in a bowl and use it as a topping for the freshly baked apple crisp. If using this topping you will want to let the crisp cool for about 20-30 minutes before adding the yogurt or it will just melt!
